Welcome to The Backfocus Spinal Exercise Program, designed specifically for people with recurring or chronic spinal pain. Recent and ongoing research continues to demonstrate the vital role of exercise therapy in the management of spinal pain and this program is designed specifically with these research findings as a guide. Our approach and the program itself is very well established and demonstrated to be successful for many people suffering from chronic spinal pain
The program is fully supervised and taught by your physiotherapist who will work closely with you to develop a specific exercise program for you. Your physiotherapist uses up to date, research based evidence on exercise prescription for the many different spinal presentations. Your Backfocus Physiotherapist is highly skilled in teaching spinal exercise and, working with you, will safely guide you through the appropriate rehab exercise for your condition.
All exercises taught are based on careful musculoskeletal examination by our highly qualified physiotherapists who can identify areas of reduced strength, flexibility or stability which the client will need to address during their rehabilitation.
It takes into consideration many factors including; type of pathology, severity and distribution of their symptoms, and lifestyle. The program progresses through 12 distinct stages beginning with basic core stability exercises and progressing through to advanced exercises utilising theraballs, theratubing, gymnasium or Pilates based programs. Your program may also involve stretching, strengthening or aerobic exercise One of the goals of our program is to empower the client to manage their spinal conditions independently on completion of the program.
The aim of the program is not only to reduce your pain levels but to improve your ability to perform work, sporting and social activities. You will learn to self manage your exercise and by continuing with the exercises you will reduce the risks of recurrence. During the program a range of outcome measurement tools are used to monitor any changes helping you to evaluate the effect of the exercises on your condition. Generally the program lasts between 6 and 12 weeks depending on the severity of your presentation. The program is tailored to your personal needs as well – for instance it can be gym based or made to suit your home or work environment.
Following the program we strongly recommend that you continue to exercise for at least 6 – 12 months. We would like to emphasize that it is important you consider making the exercises an ongoing part of your life. The benefits of specific spinal exercise training are reported clearly in many good clinical trials. Regular performance of your exercises will improve your ability to perform normal activities and reduce your pain levels.
Your commitment to this program will determine how successful you will be - it will take a lot of effort and require you to be very determined. It is a major step toward taking control of your spinal pain. Good luck!
