Clinical Pilates Studio in Melbourne

At Backfocus Physiotherapy, we believe back pain recovery is a process that requires time and gradual effort.

Our Clinical Pilates exercise program in Melbourne will help you on your recovery journey by building your core-strength over time and effectively targeting and reducing chronic back pain

Based on the traditional Pilates technique, Clinical Pilates is an integrated set of exercises designed by physiotherapists to improve core stability, target spinal pain and assist in injury prevention and recovery.

By improving the efficiency of your spinal, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, our Clinical Pilates will help you to target improvement in:

  • posture
  • strength
  • flexibility
  • it is also a great way of keeping in shape.

Clinical Pilates studio exercises are guided by the physiotherapist’s comprehensive understanding of the mechanism and pathology of the injury combined with recent research emphasizing the importance of stability in the treatment of injuries.

How can Clinical Pilates help me?

Clinical Pilates targets the core stabilizers and focuses on improving muscle control and endurance to facilitate more efficient use of the body and reduce overstrain of your spine.

Clinical Pilates uses a combination of spring-loaded equipment, ball, and floor exercises. Programs are individually prescribed and monitored by your physiotherapist to ensure you achieve the best results.

The Clinical Pilates ‘Reformer’ forms a critical part of your program. These pieces of equipment allow your physiotherapist to very specifically and appropriately recruit trunk musculature which otherwise is very difficult to do. Most importantly it allows you to do this safely and in a graded manner avoiding the unfortunate flare ups that can occur with more generic exercise.

What you will notice

Clinical Pilates will improve the function of the trunk stabilizing muscles, resulting in better posture, co-ordination, body awareness and flexibility. Clinical Pilates will also correct faulty mechanics that underlie recurring sporting and spinal injuries.

An effective Clinical Pilates program will lead to reduced pain levels and injury recurrence, improved ability to perform work, sporting and social activities.

What conditions will benefit from Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is extremely effective in treating spinal, shoulder and hip problems. For example – clinical research has shown that poor strength and endurance of the spinal and abdominal stabilising muscles is associated with low back pain. Similarly lack of strength and flexibility in the upper spine and shoulders is associated with neck and shoulder problems. Thankfully the specific retraining of these muscles that occurs with Clinical Pilates programs successfully restores strength and flexibility, reducing pain and the risk of injury recurrence.

Our physiotherapists have a comprehensive understanding of the biomechanics and pathology of spinal, shoulder and hip pain. Using the latest research, they can prescribe for you a highly personalized Clinical Pilates program to significantly reduce and manage your symptoms.

Clinical Pilates will deliver great benefit for many conditions, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Lumbar disc and facet pathology, arthritis or instability
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder and hip problems
  • Pre and post-pregnancy pain
  • Sports injuries

What does Clinical Pilates involve?

Your physiotherapist will conduct a full musculoskeletal assessment and prescribe a closely monitored program to specifically address your individual needs.

Your program will have closely supervised sessions on the Clinical Reformer once or twice per week for 6 to 10 weeks. You may then progress to group sessions or move purely to a home program.

Early in your treatment you will be taught a home exercise program which compliments what you are doing on the equipment in the treatment suite (Pilates Reformers).

Clinical Pilates is classed as a physiotherapy consultation and is rebateable through your private health insurance. Our therapists are also registered with Workcover, TAC, Veteran Affairs and Medicare.
