An Exercise Physiologist is a healthcare professional who specialises in either exercise rehabilitation or health and fitness. They use exercise as a treatment tool during rehabilitation for a range of presentations or for strengthening the body and maintaining fitness.
Our exercise physiologist works directly with clinical physiotherapists to help implement and supervise exercise therapy for many of our patients.
In their assessment the Exercise Physiologist will consider the unique needs of the client, be it a back injury or a condition such as diabetes or osteoporosis, when designing an exercise program. The Exercise Physiologist will teach the program and monitor the clients’ progress to help them achieve their goals.
Along with working alongside our Physiotherapists our Exercise Physiologist provides targeted condition specific programs.
Each of these programs is based on the most recent evidence emphasizing and supporting the use of specific exercise approaches in target groups. For instance particular types of exercise are demonstrated to help reduce the risk of fracture in osteoporosis sufferers or reduce blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
Some private health insurance companies recognize Exercise Physiology and will give rebates to their members. These are MBF, CBHS Friendly Society, Australian Unity (only if previously Manchester Unity), NIB, AHM, GU Health, HBF, HCF, Reserve Bank, Teacher's Federation and Medibank Private.
Medicare rebates are available to clients with chronic or complex conditions that have been present for more than 3 years. You must be referred by your General Practitioner under the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. 5 Allied Health services are available per year. Exercise Physiology referrals may include those for management of Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity and Chronic low back pain.
From 1 May 2007, new allied health items (81100 to 81125) will allow people with type 2 diabetes to receive Medicare rebates for group services provided by eligible diabetes educators, exercise physiologists and dietitians, on referral from a GP. These services are in addition to the five individual allied health services available to eligible patients each calendar year.
people receiving care for a Workcover injury qualify to receive exercise physiology with referral from their GP.
Exercise physiology is rebateable through your private health insurance. Our therapists are registered with Workcover and medicare.
